After Week 1 it was far from a hot take for Chicago Bears fans to point to the idea of Caleb Williams being poised to go on an MVP run. One that would be the first Chicago player to earn the award since Walter Payton back in the 1977 season. It is difficult to believe that the drought has lasted this long, but points to an award that has turned into a quarterback honor with no other position getting serious consideration. With this in mind, it makes far more sense that Chicago has waited as long as they have.

Williams appeared poised to change this and become the team's first 4,000 yard passer before a hamstring injury that took the signal caller out in Week 2 and would cause him to miss the three following games. Stepping back onto the field Williams picked up right where he left off passing for 305 yards in what was a near perfect performance.

Now, the quarterback has 712 passing yards and a trio of touchdowns, with a completion percentage of 72.5% pointing to just how elite of a start it has been to the year. If not for the time missed it is very easy to argue that the signal caller would be at the top of the MVP race.

In many ways this has been an underwhelming season when it comes to current quarterback play, with Josh Allen and Brock Purdy setting the tone. Williams would have an argument to be ahead of either player in the race if not for time missed that clearly disqualifies any such run.

Caleb Williams robbed of MVP run as Bears fans continue to appreciate quarterback's greatness

This is where it is important to note that despite the obvious frustration there is still a chance to accomplish the ultimate goal. Williams has been very vocal when it comes to his contract status or personal goals that it is winning above all else. This shows up in how the quarterback plays and is reflected in the attitude of his teammates and head coach.

As great as it would've been to see this MVP drought finally end, that isn't the ultimate goal Chicago fans are hoping to watch accomplished. The quarterback having time to get completely healthy and Ben Johnson to figure out his most reliable playmakers will work in Chicago's favor as the franchise has a chance to get healthy at the perfect time.

No question, it is still frustrating to see the chance at awards this season taken away, but this will be only one of many such chances for a quarterback starting to become one of the faces of the league. Williams winning at least one MVP in his career remains probable, it is simply now a waiting game after a frustrating 2026 injury.
