Caleb Williams is entering his third year in the NFL, but he already might be the best quarterback in the NFC North. Despite a couple of other talented quarterbacks competing for the top spot, Williams was named the best NFC North quarterback by Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone.
Chicago Bears have the best quarterback in the NFC North
Bedinger admits that there is some projection in his analysis. However, the leaps that Williams took from his first season in the NFL to his second were worthy of trusting him to take another step and ascend to the best in the division.
"We're starting this thing off with a bit of a controversial pick, and maybe even somewhat of a hot take. But Caleb Williams took a big enough leap in his 2nd NFL season to be considered the best quarterback in the NFC North, even if we're doing a little projecting."Sayre Bedinger
This is a bold statement to make right now. With Kyler Murray potentially in the mix, the NFC North could have the strongest group of quarterbacks from top to bottom. Murray would not be the fourth-best passer in most divisions.
However, right now it is clearly down to Jared Goff, Jordan Love, or Williams as the top passer until Murray proves he can stay healthy and fit into the Minnesota Vikings system. Even then, Williams has just as much of a case to be ranked third as he does first.
He ranked third amongst the three quarterbacks in passer rating. That is likely because the other two had completion rates over 66%, while Williams was down at 58%.
However, the reason Williams rated higher than these two was the big plays. Despite completing far fewer passes, he had 3,942 yards, which was more than Love, who had 3,381. It was behind Goff at 4,564, though.
Williams was behind Goff in most major passing categories last year. However, he had 388 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Goff had 45 yards and no touchdowns. When adding that into passing numbers, the two are much closer.
Williams gets the edge for two reasons. First, the projection that was mentioned. He is going into year three, and progression is expected. Goff will enter his 11th season, and he is what many expect at this point.
More than that, Goff put up those stats on a 9-8 team. Their defense let them down and forced him to produce more. Meanwhile, the Bears were 11-6 and did not need to get more stats from their quarterback.
At the end of the day, the 2026 season will help us differentiate the group because it is airtight. It comes down to the flavor you prefer, and this analyst chose Williams.
