Coming out of Week 1, part of the Chicago Bears discourse has been centered around Caleb Williams. There was a well-covered quote this past week where Williams spoke with Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales after scoring 59 points and took the time to point out to the head coach that they were a difficult defense. No question, it wasn't an ideal quote, but one that took on a life of its own due to the fact Williams has quickly become a household name.
What Williams meant was clear to any average football fan understanding that this is typical of postgame handshakes. You're attempting to be gracious in defeat and this was simply a bad choice of words while the sentiment was clear from the star quarterback. The fact that mics picked this up and it has become a story of its own over the last week speaks for itself.
Chicago fans already know what a star the quarterback has proven to be; the fact the rest of the league is starting to catch on is evidenced by the fact that this was even a story. While a lesser quarterback isn't scoring at such an elite level, even an accomplished offensive day for one of the league's lesser starters isn't garnering this attention.

It is easy to begin to argue that Williams is on his way to becoming one of the clear faces of the league. When talking about the league's top starters it seems that only Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have garnered more attention over the last year. If the Bears can make a deep playoff run and Williams is able to stay healthy there is no question he will receive the same level of attention moving forward.
The league understands that Williams is driving both views and attention and this was evidenced simply by the coverage around a simple postgame exchange. An understandable piece of this as well is the fact that it is objectively hilarious to run up the score on a team and end your postgame by talking about what a challenge the defense was.
Regardless of how it is viewed, there is no debating that the quarterback is a star in this league and could be on his way to becoming the face. Quarterbacks have long defined the league and Mahomes and Allen are both on the wrong side of 30 leaving room for Williams to begin to take this position.
Whether or not he manages this level of accomplishment, the quarterback is already one of the superstars of this league and this week has helped prove just that.
