The Chicago Bears have made their feelings very clear when it comes to veteran backup Case Keenum. The signal caller's impact goes far deeper than just providing security at the position, but being able to help mentor young quarterbacks in Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent. Keeping the aging backup rostered speaks to this, while Williams himself offered a take that clarifies just how much of an impact Keenum has had thus far on the young quarterback's career.
Williams recently appeared on Hot Ones and was asked about who could have a future as a head coach as well as which veteran taught him the most. After initially going in a different direction for the coaching position Williams circled back to Keenum jumping to the quarterback teaching him the most as well without any hesitation. It is incredibly telling that Williams has so much respect for the veteran quarterback and speaks to why Ben Johnson talked Keenum out of retirement ahead of the 2025 season.
With this in mind, it is fair to wonder if the Bears won't keep the quarterback in a coaching role as soon as he is ready to call it a career. Hiring Keenum as a quarterback coach makes a great deal of sense and allows the clear ability to be elevated to offensive coordinator if Ben Johnson's coaching staff continues to be robbed in future offseasons.
Bears fans better understand value of veteran Case Keenum after recent Caleb Williams comments
Regardless of what the future holds, it is easy to look at the comments of Williams and better appreciate what Keenum is bringing to the organization. It is easy to write off an aging player who only takes the field in the preseason and likely isn't the one starting even if the incredibly durable Williams were to miss time. What Keenum brings shows up in the meeting rooms and on the sideline and has helped create the start that Williams is becoming.
As much credit as the quarterback himself deserves, a young player is often only going to find a path to consistency at this level with great minds around him. Johnson is clearly one of those and has been exactly what Chicago has spent much of the last decade searching for.
However, lost is credit that is due to Keenum as well for the positive influence and help he has provided Williams. Answering both the head coach question as well as pointing to Keenum as the teammate who has helped him the most is incredibly telling and allows Chicago fans to appreciate the aging veteran.
