The temperatures are expected to be flaring when the Chicago Bears head south to take on the Carolina Panthers for their first game of the regular season. Ben Johnson has always been a bit of a madman when it comes to driving his team, and preparing for the heat isn't any different.
Gabby Hajduk, a well known and reputable Bears reporter outlined conditions for the Bears practice on Thursday. It's essentially been one of the hottest weeks of the year in Chicago, and certainly the hottest since the Bears returned to training camp. Yet coach Johnson rounded out the practice day with a long ten minute exercise designed to prepare the players for the heated conditions.
With the forecast for resting around the high eighties, and the humidity high early in the day, it's going to be a grueling time for the players on the field. Playing your hardest in conditions like that, wearing the required gear is exhausting, and the Bears will need to do everything they can to win the battle against fatigue.
Ben Johnson knows this.
Ben Johnson made discomfort part of the Bears' preparation
While the Bears are on the road for Week 1, it's important to note that they prepared for this. With multiple joint practices and scrimmage games through the summer, the Bears practiced their travel routines, and that's not a benefit that every team had. Keeping the players in the right head space is the responsibility of the organization and the player alike, which is why it's
The life of an NFL player is constantly on the road. It's nice when you have home games, but eight of the Bears seventeen games this season are on the road. Those multiple-day stretches spent in Cincinnati and Nashville earlier this summer may just pay off.
The Bears can prepare as much as they'd like for the conditions, but there's no getting around Carolina's advantage. This is their home turf after all, and they've been practicing as such for months.
If the Bears can fend off their fatigue long enough to put a dent in the scoreboard, they have a really good chance of winning this game. The Panthers have been through a lot in the last few years, but coach Canales has done a number on improving their play, and late 2025 saw Caroling remarkably improve. No opponent should be taken lightly in the NFL.
Johnson cannot lower the temperature in Charlotte, but he has spent the summer preparing his players to function through discomfort. Sunday will show whether all of that work can keep the Bears from wilting when the heat becomes real.
