Caleb Williams continues to draw national attention entering his third NFL season. The recent buzz surrounding the young quarterback isn't entirely unexpected. With the recent Madden recognition following him everywhere, and his name being dropped by division rival Micah Parsons in the NFL's Top 100 teaser, one can only expect a torrent of fame to follow.
With all of that buzz surrounding him, and the understanding that even with two season's of NFL experience under his belt, Williams is still only 24 years old. Bears head coach Ben Johnson was recently asked about the necessity to step in and to help mitigate all of the attention. But Johnson was cut and clear about Williams always being professional.
"I'm focused on coaching him. Our discussions are always about football. This is a guy that's grown up in this. He's been a five-star recruit. He's won a Heisman. I think he knows how to handle attention. You come to a big city like Chicago, a team that loves their sports, a place that loves their sports and loves the Bears. I think this is kind of what he's built for, so I think it's a good match."Ben Johnson
Williams hasn't gotten to where he is by mistake, and coach Johnson knows that. Williams' name was thrown around the rumor mill for years before he even made it to the draft. Expectations followed him from high school recruiting rankings, and they've never stopped. None of this is new to the Heisman winner.
Chicago has been desperate for a figure like Williams for years. Even now, two season's into Williams being the franchise guy, many Chicago fans refuse to believe that he'll be around long term. Chicago hasn't had a complete option at quarterback for so long that it's simply not a concept we're used to. The increased attention frequently fans the flames of expectation, creating an environment even Tom Brady himself couldn't meet.
Now that we have the quarterback of the future, it only seems right that we have an excellent offensive minded head coach to develop with Williams. Johnson's job is to keep his eye on the prize, and to steer Williams to be a better football player. As long as Williams continues handling the attention the way he always has, the Bears can keep their attention where Coach Johnson wants it: on football.
