Chris Simms just gave Bears fans another reason to believe in Caleb Williams

Despite ranking sixth on his quarterback list, Simms said Williams might be his top choice to build a franchise around.

The Chicago Bears have the sixth-best quarterback in the NFL, according to Chris Simms. Simms broke down all of the quarterbacks in the NFL and ranked Williams sixth overall, but he said that if he were choosing a quarterback to start a franchise with, he might take Williams first overall.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams ranked sixth on the QB countdown list

The only quarterbacks that Simms has above Williams are Matthew Stafford, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen. Most of those quarterbacks have won an MVP, and two of them have won Super Bowls, so that is tough ground for Williams to break.

However, aside from the year-in and year-out MVP candidates, Simms has Williams as the next best thing.

That is notable because most rankings tend to lean heavily on production and accomplishments. Williams has shown flashes of elite play, but he has not put together the statistical season that some of the quarterbacks below him have. Simms is clearly projecting forward and valuing the traits more than the production.

He still holds onto the ball too long, and his accuracy tends to be hit or miss. He was coached hard by Ben Johnson, and even Johnson has been clear that he expects Williams to improve in a lot of areas compared to last year.

So, for Williams to come in at number six despite the issues makes you think about what he can do when everything starts to come together for him.

As Simms mentions, things such as the arm strength, the quick snap that gets the ball out quick, the ability to extend plays down the field, all of that can be reasons why he ranks ahead of quarterbacks who put together bigger seasons than him.

The most interesting names will be Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels. After their rookie seasons, everyone saw Daniels as the best quarterback in that draft class. He made the playoff run as a rookie. However, after year two, it was Maye who was the MVP candidate. According to this ranking, Williams is better than both of them.

All three are considered high-end quarterbacks, and the debate between the three will rage on for years. For Bears fans, it is fun to finally be included in the discussion as it looks like they finally hit on their quarterback, whether he is sixth or tenth entering the 2026 season.
