Today is the first day of full padded practice for the Chicago Bears and the team at Training Camp. Head coach Ben Johnson took to the podium where he was promptly asked about young running back Kyle Monangai and the challenges he's approaching in the face of injury. Monangai's absence has been noted by multiple outlets, with many even using it as a reason the Bears should extend D'Andre Swift.

Ben Johnson does not sound concerned

"It's really the status quo. We're taking it day by day right now, but we're working through it. He's working hard with his rehab, and it should be on the shorter side here. It's just a soft tissue deal."

Not only did coach Johnson not seem entirely concerned about Monangai's injury, he projected confidence. Johnson's description of the injury as the "status quo" really hoses the flames of the rumor mill on this one. Nothing about Johnson's attitude suggested that fans should be troubled by this update.

Though Johnson may be confident, it is worth noting that soft tissue injuries can linger. Soft tissue injuries can often be more difficult to manage because it's not just mechanics that you're managing. These sort of injuries require caution and practicality during training camp. Having the training wheels on during camp can seriously set back the work that Monangai would have done had he been healthy.

All in all, Johnson's emphasis on status quo should quash any rumors that the Bears are going to need to take measures because they'll be down a back. For now, it's just a manageable camp injury that doesn't require pause. Missing practice time is certainly important, but a short interruption is preferable over missing genuine snaps during preseason or beyond.

There will be reason for concern if Monangai’s absence extends beyond Johnson’s initial expectation. Until then, the Bears can afford to let him complete his rehab without turning a manageable camp injury into something more significant.
