While initial reports are that Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant is expected to miss eight to ten weeks with a left knee injury, head coach Ben Johnson cleared things up with reporters that the timeline is still up in the air. Johnson said that the team is still gathering information on the injury so there is no way to put a date on it yet. When asked about the reported timeline, Johnson shot down the notion

“I don't know where you guys got that; that hasn't been said here,” Johnson admitted.

Whether Johnson is just playing with the media or not is up in the air, but it appears that the Bryant timeline is as well.

Chicago Bears do not have a timeline for safety Coby Bryant

Coaches tend to do this all of the time. They do not like when an insider gets information that they have not put out there themselves. So, in a way to deflect or pour cold water on the report, they will try to say that nothing is confirmed, or the report did not come from him as a source, so he does not know.

However, often when coaches do this, they are saying what the initial report said a day or two later. So, Bears fans can keep a little bit of optimism when it comes to the potential return of Bryant. However, right now it is fair to stick with the timetable that has currently been reported.

The injury and the return will be monitored heavily, though. The Bears' plans this offseason were to let the pass rush and things up front work themselves out. However, they made a plan to put an effort into improving the secondary.

They made Bryant their biggest free agent acquisition, and Dillon Thieneman was their top selection in the draft. The team was expected to have Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon healthy, and they are two players that have real salary cap space invested in them.

So, the secondary needs to be a strength. So far, Gordon has not practiced at all, and now Bryant is expected to miss time that could bleed into the season. The strength of the defense got weak quickly.

Any week the Bears can get Bryant back sooner would be huge, which is why Johnson will not slam the door on Week 1. However, pushing him could make it worse, so they have to be cautious.
