The Chicago Bears announced that safety Coby Bryant is expected to miss eight to ten weeks due to a hyper-extended knee. The Bears are just under six weeks from the start of the regular season. So Bryant will certainly miss two games and could miss four games. While the team is not deep at safety, they fortunately signed Cam Lewis, who does have plenty of experience. This could be a career-defining chance for Lewis.
Cam Lewis Has Massive Opportunity with Chicago Bears
Lewis spent his first six years with the Buffalo Bills. While he was not a full-time starter, he did make 14 starts over that time. He slowly started to earn more work with the Bills, and by the end of his time there, he was a legitimate subpackage football player.
During his rookie year, he only played 75 snaps, and then played in just 66 snaps the following year. He started to see a little bit more work from there. He only played in 117 snaps during his third NFL season, but by his fourth year, he played 179 snaps and was starting to become a relied-on defender.
The Bills brought him back, and he started to get some legitimate work, both in the slot and at safety. He played 635 snaps and started in six games. He only appeared in 442 snaps the next season, but played more than 20 snaps in eight different games, showing that he had a role.
More than that, the versatility he displayed in his six years is what intrigued Chicago. He had 545 snaps in the slot and 825 snaps as a safety.
He left Buffalo after Sean McDermott left, and now he is looking to catch on and prove that he belongs as a starter. He signed a two-year, $6M deal with the Bears. However, if he can play well, his next contract will end up much higher than that.
Lewis has always proven that he belongs in the NFL; he just has not had the chance to start consistently. While his starting chance might be brief, it also might be under the spotlight just enough that a team will give him a look after next season.
More than that, Lewis has a real chance to stick around and get work in the slot once Bryant does come back. The door is wide open for Lewis. Even without it being a season-ending injury, Lewis can prove a lot in the next ten weeks.
