Among the many exciting headlines from Chicago Bears minicamp was a highlight of Cole Kmet throwing a perfect spiral to Rome Odunze. What made the play so impressive wasn't just the strong spiral, but the fact that it was a deep throw that appeared perfectly on target and gave Bears fans a clear idea. While you rarely want to take the ball out of the hands of Caleb Williams, there is no denying the incredible value of trick plays. Head coach Ben Johnson was known for this ability during his time with the Detroit Lions.

Kmet flashing such an arm puts it very much on the table that we see this in the 2026 season. It makes sense when you consider the potential for double passes with the speed of Luther Burden, Kalif Raymond, and Zavion Thomas giving the franchise no shortage of deep threats. Getting the ball to Kmet in a creative way and allowing the tight end to hit a big shot is very much on the board.

Johnson is known for creativity and his attempts to make offense fun, and there is no denying that this fits both of these. Chicago fans would lose their minds seeing Kmet pull this off in the regular season or even a potential playoff matchup if Johnson is brave enough to take the risk.

Cole Kmet Highlight Offers Bears Clear Trick Play Potential

One of the most famous plays in Super Bowl history was a tight end pass with Philadelphia Eagles tight end Trey Burton finding quarterback Nick Foles for a game-defining touchdown that would help cement the upset of Tom Brady's New England Patriots. While a moment this iconic is unlikely, there is no denying the likelihood that Johnson has his own version of the play hiding in the playbook.

Kmet clearly has the ability, and it would be fun to see it utilized at least once in the 2026 season. Chicago will likely want to save it for a rainy day or a moment when a game is in hand, and Johnson simply wants to roll out one of his many tricks.

Utilizing it against a division rival would be undeniably juicy as the Bears continue to get revenge on NFC North rivals. Regardless of when, there is no denying that Kmet's ability is noticed, and Johnson is scheming on how to best utilize it. Something fans are well aware of and excited to see, understanding this is unlikely to be the final highlight we see of Kmet tossing the football.
