Bears still have major WR concerns despite Scotty Miller addition

Scotty Miller gives Chicago another option, but the Bears still need more reliable depth at receiver.

The Chicago Bears finally made a depth move at receiver this week, bringing in Scotty Miller to help shore up a questionable depth chart. Miller was given a tryout in rookie minicamp and obviously made the most of it, earning a spot on the Chicago roster. While this is a solid step in the right direction, it shouldn't be the team's final move at the position. This is a roster that lost considerable depth in the 2026 offseason with DJ Moore, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Devin Duvernay all leaving the Bears.

Chicago's answer is signings of Scotty Miller and Kalif Raymond, while drafting Zavion Thomas. This is an interesting trio of possibilities, but none are proven to be great options working in Ben Johnson's system. It would be wise to bring in at least one more capable veteran to compete for a roster spot and push the pieces at the bottom of the depth chart.

It doesn't need to be a star addition, but in the same vein as Miller and Raymond, a veteran player with a track record of being productive and offering clear upside within the offense. This is due both to the unknowns with the current options and what happens if the Bears face injury at a physically demanding position.

The Bears are one injury away from having serious concerns at receiver, and signing Miller doesn't change this fact. If anything, it points to the need to make one further addition to give a bit of stability to reinforce a receivers room that still feels unfinished.

Bears Shouldn't Stop Adding to Position Despite Signing Scotty Miller

Miller hasn't been consistently productive since the 2020 season, when the pass catcher was paired with Tom Brady and offered 501 receiving yards. Over the last two years, Miller hasn't come close to this total, offering only 131 combined receiving yards in the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This makes it clear that the speedy veteran is a wildcard and is being added in hopes that the Bears can turn back the clock. While this isn't a bad move for Chicago, it shouldn't be made with the belief that further additions shouldn't continue to be made at the position.

The Bears have an incredibly talented quarterback and should be doing everything within their power to support the young signal caller heading into year three. A big piece of this is offering a bit more target depth and setting up Chicago's roster to survive injuries to the position.

With this in mind, the Bears need to continue to remain active both in the trade and free agent markets, keeping an eye out for any potential fits. Fits that would continue to fill the clear void left by Chicago's 2026 offseason departures.
