The Chicago Bears announced the signings of edge rusher Marcus Davenport and defensive back Denatre Prince. In the corresponding moves, running back Coleman Bennett was waived, and tight end Nikola Kalinic was released with an injury designation.

Those two were part of training camp battles for the end of the roster spots, so the moves help clarify things at two positions that have depth options.

Chicago Bears end of roster comes into focus with recent moves

The most notable name is Bennett, who was in the middle of a four-man competition at running back for the third spot, which will be a roster spot. However, the rookie UDFA was facing an uphill battle.

Roschon Johnson is a draft pick who has not been able to stay healthy. When he does, he is a valuable addition on special teams. He started for the Bears, signaling that he is in the lead for the third spot.

However, Salvon Ahmed seems to be making a strong run at the spot. He got praised in training camp and parlayed that into two rushes for 17 yards along with three catches for 55 yards. It was the best yards per carry of the group and the most receiving work.

Brittain Brown suited up for Chicago for three games last year. He had five carries for eight yards in the preseason. It was not impressive, but his familiarity kept him over Bennett.

So, he was fourth in the competition for one spot. The last two weeks will now be focused on sorting out the final three.

Kalinic was with the Bears last season and was active for just two games. He could clear waivers and revert to the IR, so this might not be the last time we see Kalinic with the Bears.

However, it does give some clarity to the fourth tight end spot. The fourth tight end is not a lock to make the roster, but there is a strong chance, and a lock to make the practice squad.

Stephen Carlson was on the practice squad last year and could be back this year. Qadir Ismael is shifting from receiver, so he could get a spot to develop as well. Then, there is Hayden Large, who is a rookie UDFA they might want to keep around. All three bring more intrigue to the practice squad.

The Bears have two games to decide between these three tight ends and three running backs.
