The preseason is significant for getting in-depth looks at specific players and position battles. One position that should be under the spotlight in the preseason opener is the running back room. We should only see a small dose of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. This is going to leave a wide-open competition for the third running back spot to start to sort itself out.
Chicago Bears Third Running Back Spot is Wide Open
We should get long looks at Roschon Johnson, Brittan Brown, Coleman Bennett, and Salvon Ahmed. All four can make a case for being the team's third running back.
Roschon Johnson
Johnson was the Bears' fourth-round pick in 2023. However, he has slowly been slipping down the roster. He had 81 carries for 352 yards in his rookie season. Injuries became an issue and he only had 55 carries for 150 yards the next year. In his third year, the team changed coaches and he could not stay healthy. So he was active for just seven games.
He has the most pedigree of the four and has special teams value. Johnson is also the most unreliable and the only one that Johnson did not sign off on bringing in.
Brittain Brown
Brown was a seventh-round pick back in 2022 by the Las Vegas Raiders. He spent two seasons with the Raiders and was with Seattle in 2024. The Bears signed him as depth in 2025, but the lack of players stepping up caused him to make the roster. He carried the ball five times for 37 yards.
So, Johnson signed him, and he is back for another year. Still, he has been unable to stick entering his fifth NFL season.
Coleman Bennett
Bennett is a rookie UDFA from Kennesaw State. So, this is a rookie that Johnson and his staff added. They hit on Kyle Monangai and could hit on Bennet. At the same time, most UDFAs struggle to make an impact early, and the other three have much more experience.
Salvon Ahmed
The name to note from training camp has been Ahmed. Ahmed has been in the NFL since 2020 and has 163 carries. So, in his case, he is flashing and has experience. Still, he has had zero carries since 2023. He is older than Bennett and has less experience in the offense than Brown and Johnson.
Any of the four can step into the third spot, and that competition picks up in the preseason.
