The Chicago Bears drafted Logan Jones higher than many expected in the 2026 NFL Draft, making it clear that the organization believes he can become an important piece of the offensive line. Because of where he was selected, there is also a strong chance the Bears want him competing for a starting role sooner rather than later.
The Chicago Bears' future center is forming a bond with Caleb Williams
Jones recently explained that adjusting to the NFL is not only about the physical side of the game. There is also a major mental adjustment, especially at the center position. According to Jones, one of the biggest factors in helping him get on the field quickly is building chemistry with quarterback Caleb Williams.
Bears rookie center Logan Jones on building a rapport with Caleb Williams: "I think just being around the facility is the biggest thing. Gaining his trust just talking to them. I think it starts there, you know, and I think that'll start next week, get to hang out with him and…

That makes complete sense considering the relationship between a quarterback and center. The two players are involved in every snap and must constantly communicate before plays begin. Much of that communication happens quickly through signals, protections, and adjustments at the line of scrimmage. If the quarterback and center are not on the same page, the offense can break down before the play even develops.
Because of that, it is a positive sign that Jones already understands the importance of that relationship and is actively trying to build chemistry with Williams early in his career. Jones also mentioned that Williams spends time around the offensive line as a whole, which is another encouraging detail for the offense moving forward. Quarterbacks rely heavily on the players protecting them, and developing trust across the offensive line is important for the growth of the unit.
On the field, Jones is expected to compete with Garrett Bradbury for the starting center job. Bradbury brings more NFL experience, but Jones may already have momentum because of the investment the Bears made in him during the draft. Chicago selected him high enough that there is a clear expectation for him to contribute early in his career.
The Bears will still make him earn the role, and Bradbury is not simply going to hand over the starting spot. However, the long-term outlook of the team matters here as well. Head coach Ben Johnson and Williams likely understand that the best path forward involves Jones developing quickly and growing alongside the young quarterback.
That development is difficult to achieve from the bench. Once the competition between Jones and Bradbury becomes close, the Bears could lean toward giving the rookie the opportunity so he can gain experience and continue building chemistry with Williams during actual game action.
There are still questions about exactly how quickly Jones can win the job, especially with the mental side of the position being so demanding. Still, the way he has approached the transition and the importance he has placed on his relationship with Williams are positive early signs.
Because of that, there is a realistic chance Jones earns the starting center role at some point during the early portion of the season and begins establishing himself as a long-term piece of the Bears offense.
