One of the more surprising names remaining in free agency is former Chicago Bears receiver Keenan Allen. Even at this late stage of the pass catcher's career, Allen has remained productive, offering over 700 receiving yards each of the past two seasons. Allen spent the 2024 season with Chicago, serving as a veteran security blanket for a rookie Caleb Williams and helping the quarterback adjust to the next level. Now, as we close in on the summer, the aging receiver remains in free agency as one of the top remaining options.

It is fair to wonder if this is by Allen's own volition, with the pass catcher opting to be extremely picky about his next landing spot. Regardless of the reasoning, it is surprising to see such a respected and productive option remain unsigned. It is something that Chicago should consider providing a remedy to, as well as a handful of contenders.

For the Bears, a reunion makes sense after the offseason departures of DJ Moore, Devin Duvernay, and Olamide Zaccheaus have left some obvious depth concerns. Allen's lone season in Chicago was productive, with 744 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in a season that helped set the table for what Williams would become the following year.

No matter whether it is a return to the Bears, Chargers, or a new landing spot, it would be a surprise not to see Allen continue his career after the past two seasons. The performance has been consistent and left every reason for expected contenders to be interested.

Former Bears Receiver Keenan Allen Remains a Free Agent Despite Recent Production

Allen being in free agency this late in the offseason could be attributed, as well, to unexpected depth at the position. Tyreek Hill and Stefon Diggs remain unsigned, perhaps halting the market at the position for an aging Allen. It could be that the receiver is waiting out the market with interested teams weighing the fit of each remaining veteran free agent.

No matter the reason, there is no arguing against the fact that, of this trio, Allen has proven to be the more accomplished teammate. While Diggs and Hill have a history of being a distraction in their respective landing spots, Allen goes to work and carves out a role, no matter the offense or quarterback situation he might be facing.

This is another reason why the veteran remaining unsigned is a bit surprising and should at least catch some attention from Chicago. A reunion isn't out of the question, and the longer that Allen's free agency continues, the more likely it is that past relationships come into play to end Allen's free agency and solve Chicago's depth concerns at the position.
