Bears Remove All Excuses for Caleb Williams in Latest ESPN Mock Draft
By Cem Yolbulan
The Chicago Bears lost seven straight and are headed to another losing season outside of playoff contention. They are 4-9 in what has been an incredibly disappointing season.
Most of the disappointment has come on the offensive side of the ball. Despite drafting Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, selecting Rome Odunze, one of the best wide receivers in the draft, and bringing in the likes of D'Andre Swift and Keenan Allen, the Bears offense took a step back from a year ago. They are ranked dead last in yards and 24th in points.
With their attention turned to the offseason, the Bears will presumably try to address their offensive holes first. The NFL Draft will give them the first chance to do so. In the latest ESPN mock draft by Field Yates, the Bears once again try to make things easier for Caleb Williams. With the No. 9 overall pick, they select one of the best offensive linemen in the class, LSU's Will Campbell.
"Campbell is an incredibly balanced player with terrific footwork -- I'd argue better than any other offensive lineman in the class -- and has 37 career starts worth of experience. He was a day one starter at left tackle for LSU, and while Campbell is only 20 years old, he brings plenty of polish to the position."
- Field Yates, ESPN
Caleb Williams has taken more hits and sacks than any other quarterback in the NFL this season. In 13 games, he was sacked a whopping 56 times, 15 more than the second-most sacked quarterback.
Some of the blame is obviously on him. A significant portion, however, can be levied on the offensive line. Considering how much talent is on the offensive side of the ball, the offensive line is the only remaining position that needs significant upgrades.
Bringing in Campbell to replace Braxton Jones at left tackle might be the only move left. Once that is done, Caleb Williams will not have any excuses left.
