The Chicago Bears are expected to get Caleb Williams back in their starting lineup for their Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. While the team has not officially announced that Williams will start, he was a full participant in practice on Thursday, and he spoke to the media after practice, which a starter tends to do.
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams opens up before his Week 6 return
Williams noted that he is moving well and has been progressing over the past few weeks. However, he still needs to get through the full week to be signed off to start.
"This is a big week,” admitted Williams. “I've been going through cutting and planting over the past couple of weeks, and it's felt good; you've seen me moving around on Fridays and before games. But it's different when you have to go through a full week of practice, prepare for a game, and take on that stress on the mind, body, and spirit. We'll see how it goes."
Williams was seen working out before the Bears' loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. It ended up being the Bears' only positive news of the day. Chicago has gone 2-1 without Williams.
They won their first game against the Philadelphia Eagles with Case Keenum and followed that up with an impressive win against the New York Jets starting Tyson Bagent. However, their backups only got them through two games. Things came back down to earth in the Bears' Week 5 loss to the Packers.
Williams also addressed the emotion he showed after the game. He noted that he was not sure how long he would be out, and that the thought of missing a chance to lead his team hurt.
“Yeah, I’m always going to show emotion, especially when I can’t be out there with the guys,” admitted Williams. “I care about the team, the organization, winning, being out there, my teammates—all of that. I care, and that’s the biggest thing. This is what I love to do. This puts a smile on my face. It’s everything to me. So, not being able to be out there was frustrating. That was more of the tears, or whatever that was.”
The Bears have a tough decision to make. Week 6 is a key game against a conference foe. However, they have a quick turnaround for Week 7 on Thursday Night Football. If Williams plays Sunday, he will need to heal quickly. If they bring him back in Week 7, he can take time to heal before Week 8, which is well over a week after their past game.
