One of the more surprising headlines of the Chicago Bears' solid 2025 preseason was the extension of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. On the heels of veteran Case Keenum's injury, it calls into question which quarterback might first be called upon if Caleb Williams does deal with an injury this season. With the preseason now in the books, it seems safe to say that Bagent has made it clear he deserves this role.

To say the backup showed clear growth over the last weeks would be an understatement. It is clear that the coaching change has helped the signal caller's development and given Chicago a solid backup for the next handful of seasons. Bagent finished the preseason finale 20/28 for 212 yards and a trio of touchdown passes. It is clear that Keenum needs to be in the third spot on the depth chart.

Both players should make the final roster, with Keenum's importance remaining his experience and the voice he can offer Williams. The young quarterback is under a great deal of pressure and is still working to adjust his play style to the league's standards. For Keenum, being the third option isn't a big deal, especially coming off a preseason injury concern.

Tyson Bagent Should be the Bears' QB2 Behind Caleb Williams

Keenum was talked out of retirement by Ben Johnson to come in and help guide the young franchise quarterback. It makes sense to do this whether the veteran is the second or third option on the depth chart. There is also no denying that Bagent has earned the role with his incredible preseason play and the consistent growth he has shown throughout the summer.

At this point, it would be a surprise to see the Bears reach any other conclusion as they put Keenum into what is really a player/coach role. With this in mind, it is a pivotal season for Bagent to prove that the Bears didn't make a mistake paying him so early. While this hopefully won't happen with actual game reps, the Bears want to continue to see growth in practice throughout the season.

For Bagent, it is an exciting step forward that the young quarterback highlighted in his response to the extension. Even around the backup quarterback options, the energy and excitement around the Bears feels far different this season. Something a tortured fan base can only hope is a sign of the season to come.
