Roschon Johnson is likely spending his last training camp with the Chicago Bears. The question is more about whether this is his last season with the team or whether they move on before the season even starts. The fourth-year, former fourth-round pick was listed as a likely cut candidate and a potential fit with the Carolina Panthers by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report.Â
The Chicago Bears are expected to cut Roschon Johnson this offseasonÂ
Johnson has not been able to settle in with the Bears. He posted 352 yards during his rookie season, but was unable to take a firm hold of the backfield. He suffered a concussion in Week 5 when he had a chance to start. He was out through Week 8 and lost any momentum he gained towards getting in the lineup.Â
In 2024, he was relatively healthy but continued to miss just enough time to limit his chances during any running back competition. So, D’Andre Swift took a firm hold of the backfield. Johnson finished with 150 yards on 55 attempts.
The 2025 cemented his status as the third running back on the depth chart. He played in just seven games and missed the final nine with a thumb injury that put him on the Injured Reserve. Still, in the first seven games, he had two carries.
Johnson is now with a coaching staff that did not draft him. In the first year with the new staff, he saw his lowest usage yet, and they saw him get hurt. They also know he only has one year left on his deal before he is gone. The Bears could get ahead of it and let him go now.Â
This would allow them to give younger players with more long-term potential on the Bears a chance.Â
However, Johnson does bring special teams ability. The team does not want to get worse in that area, so someone who is younger would have to step into the role for him to be let go.
Given that he was a fourth-round pick and that he has been injured in two of his three years, there is not going to be much demand for Johnson. Even a team like the Panthers would use him in a similar role to Chicago. He would not be one of their top two backs.Â
So, the team can get special teams value from him, and he cannot feel he is missing chances elsewhere. There is a better chance that he stays than not.
