The Chicago Bears are unlikely to make many more roster moves through the summer now that the NFL draft is over. So, it is a good time to look through the depth charts and see where this team stands. What does the running back room look like?
Chicago Bears running back depth chart
D’Andre Swift
Swift could be viewed as a winner of the offseason for a second straight year. When Ben Johnson was hired, many thought he would move Swift and bring in his own back. While they drafted Kyle Monangai, he is more of a complement to Swift and not an upgrade. Now, he is due a contract at the end of the year. However, there is no future replacement on the roster. So, the Bears would either need to bring in a running back next offseason or potentially work out an extension with Swift this offseason before his price tag goes up. It will be interesting to see how they handle this.
Kyle Monangai
Monangai had a great rookie season. The question is what will the seventh rounder do next. He was drafted so late because he is limited and mostly will be a between the tackles grinder who is more reserved for an early down and goal line role. Now, the question is whether he can build upon it in year two. He is another winner as the team brought in no other competition and they will run back the two-headed duo.
Roschon Johnson
This should be the last season that any one comes into the season with expectations for Johnson. Every year there is an expected role for him and every year he gets hurt and does not live up to what the hype. Last year he had just two carries despite a thin room. He is a free agent after this year and is unlikely to be back.
Brittain Brown
Brown should probably be ahead of Johnson. He produced more than him last year. Still, he is mostly a journeyman depth running back with limited upside.
Deion Hankins
Hankins was a UDFA last season and spent the year on the practice squad. Given the two options ahead of him are not promising, there is a shot for Hankins to make the roster.
Coleman Bennett
Bennett is a rookie UDFA from Kennesaw State. He is from a small school, his Pro Day numbers were just okay and yet in this room, he has a fighting chance to stick around.
