Bears' Playmakers Propel Them to Week 6 Victory Against Jaguars
3. Run defense shows up
Over the first five weeks of the season, the Bears' run defense has been a huge issue. In four out of five games, they allowed the opponent to rush for over 100 combined yards. In two of those games, they allowed the opponent's lead running back to rush for over 100 yards and almost allowed a third, but he fell three yards short with 97 yards.
The Bears' biggest issue in run defense is letting up explosive runs. In three of the first five games, they let up a rushing touchdown of 20+ yards. This week, against the Jaguars, the Bears' defense did not allow a run of over 10 yards.
Minimizing explosive runs helped the Bears keep the Jaguars to 20 rushes for 68 yards. Their leading rusher was D'Ernest Johnson, who had six rushes for 28 yards with an average of 4.7 yards a carry. Tank Bigsby, who was coming off the best game of his carrer and is a powerful back, only had seven carries for 24 yards.
it should be kept in mind that the Jaguars' game script didn't call for them to run the ball much since they were down multiple scores most of the game. Still, on the run that was called, the defense definitely showed improvement at stopping it.
Moving forward, the Bears need to take how they defend the run this game and apply it to every game. If they do that, then this defense really gets scary.
