As odd as it might sound, the Chicago Bears should be looking for a little less Caleb Williams magic heading into the 2026 season. It is important to note that this isn't to argue that the off-script plays and comebacks cannot be dialed up when needed, but looking back and learning from the 2025 season and the clear improvements that need to be made. Near the top of the list is Williams getting off to a faster start now that Ben Johnson's offense has had a year to get into the quarterback's system and serve as a blueprint moving forward.

Fourth quarter magic creates memorable highlights and has the fanbase buzzing, but aren't the expectation for a player as capable as Williams. The signal caller has an elite level of talent that shouldn't consistently require such heroics, but put games out of reach a bit sooner and help the offense flow earlier in games.

This should be among the top of Johnson's priorities starting the 2026 season, understanding the need to have a higher level of consistency. It doesn't mean that Williams cannot put on the cape as needed, but that it shouldn't be a weekly event, but one saved for the league's top teams, with Chicago having the talent to win early against inferior rosters.

Bears Need Early Improvement from Caleb Williams and Less Heroics

Being able to come back and not viewing a deficit as the end, no matter the situation, is a unique skill set that few quarterbacks have. Williams has more than proven himself of having this mindset and giving the Bears a chance even in the most bleak situations. Chicago's playoff win against the Green Bay Packers serves as an example of this, with Williams putting together an incredible fourth quarter comeback to stun the division rival.

These types of moments should continue and be the expectation, however, included in this is a need to put away inferior teams earlier. Chicago has the talent to be more consistent offensively early in games and the defense to hold leads against the lesser teams of the league.

When looking at possible improvements for Williams and what the quarterback needs to do to take that next step, a big piece is a higher level of consistency. Chicago needs to be able to put teams away early and show they are able to win multiple ways, with Williams saving his magic for the truly daunting matchups. Perhaps an outlier of a take, but one that rings true with a player as talented as Williams having the ability to put teams away earlier and not always be forced to put on his cape.
