Bears must avoid making a major mistake with Trevon Diggs

Chicago has questions at cornerback, but signing the former Cowboys star would create more problems than solutions.

The Chicago Bears have some legitimate concerns at cornerback right now. Tyrique Stevenson has never been a reliable player, and Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season.

Also, there was a big turnaround in the secondary that led the league in takeaways. However, as much as they could've and should've kept an eye on the market for help at the position, that doesn't mean they should sign players just for the sake of it.

That's why they should want no part of the Trevon Diggs business right now. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently cited his ties to defensive backs coach Al Harris as a link to the Windy City, but that would just be a massive mistake.

The Bears can't afford to talk themselves into signing Trevon Diggs

It's 2026, and we have to stop trying to make Trevon Diggs happen again. He has been very bad for a much longer time than he was good, and even when he was a turnover-creating machine, he was often burned for big plays.

Yes, Al Harris helped him become an All-Pro and one of the league's ultimate ball-hawks, but that was multiple years, injuries, and incidents away. He hasn't been healthy for a while, and there's no reason to believe he'll be better in 2026.

Moreover, Diggs still carries himself like a star. He got in defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' way multiple times last season, and while Bears fans can probably sympathize with that and understand where he was coming from, he created way too much turmoil in the locker room.

The Cowboys were likely going to release him at the end of the season anyway becuase of his contract, so watching them pull the plug on him midway through the season just shows that they couldn't take it anymore; they wanted him out.

The Bears are entering a crucial season as divisional champions. Vibes and expectations are at an all-time high at Soldier Field, and the last thing they need is an entitled player trying to act like a big shot when no one in the league seems to be interested in him.

Diggs is still unsigned for a reason, and the Bears should only consider signing him if someone gets severely hurt. This team should explore the trade market if they want to get better at cornerback, but after watching Diggs' tape, reviewing the numbers and injury history, and listening to the stories, there's simply no way to justify giving him a contract in 2026.
