The Chicago Bears have one of the best right tackles in the game. Darnell Wright has earned every single penny of that contract extension, and he should continue to be the team's anchor in the trenches for years to come.
The team seemed to have found a long-term solution at left tackle in Ozzy Trapilo. While that might still be the case, he suffered a major injury just a handful of starts into his pro career, and the team might not feel that way about him anymore.
Considering that, ESPN analyst Jordan Reid had the Bears double-dipping at the position in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft. In another way too early edition, he had the Bears rolling with LSU's Jordan Seaton at No. 16.
The Bears may take another left tackle in 2027
"Ozzy Trapilo has recovered remarkably quickly from a torn patellar tendon, but there will still be questions about how long that injury will linger and his overall upside at left tackle," wrote Reid. "Until we know how well Trapilo will play, left tackle should be viewed as a huge question mark in Chicago. Seaton is an easy-moving pass protector who plays with excellent balance. He still needs to work on his hand placement, but his raw tools could eventually make him the top offensive tackle in next year's class if he performs well against an SEC schedule."
While there are plenty of reasons to feel excited about Trapilo, there are clearly more questions than answers about him right now. Of course, he can always shut down those doubts with strong play and health once he's cleared to play.
The mere fact that he's already practicing when he was supposed to miss most — if not all — of the season is already fairly encouraging. But will there be any setbacks? And will he able to pick things up where he left them right out of the gate?
Seaton is a promising player who might even boost his stock a bit more with a strong campaign for Lane Kiffin's team, and even with Trapilo there, the Bears already know how vital it is to keep Caleb Williams safe and sound.
Of course, this can all change depending on how the season goes, but with Braxton Jones struggling as the de facto blindside protector, it makes perfect sense that this team wants to have some insurance at the position.
That said, it's hard to believe the Bears will even be in a position to get their hands on Seaton to begin with. This projection has them sitting around the middle of the pack, which is kind of insulting after such an impressive first year under Ben Johnson.
The Bears are well aware that they're a primary candidate for regression; even Coach Johnson admitted it. But going from the NFC Divisional Round to potentially not even making the playoffs seems like a huge stretch.
