Fantasy football fans know that breakout players come from all aspects of the NFL draft or free agency. A seventh-round pick entering his second year is the perfect breakout candidate, and the Chicago Bears might have a player who is starting to become trendy in fantasy circles. Kyle Monanagi is a breakout waiting to happen in fantasy, according to Nic Bodiford of PFF.
Do the Chicago Bears have a fantasy football star in running back Kyle Monangai?
The biggest reason to buy into the Monangai breakout is the offseason plan that the Bears had at running back. There is a clear level of trust, not only in Monangai but also in his teammate D’Andre Swift. The Bears did not add anyone of significance in either free agency or the draft. They signed a UDFA rookie, but he does not have the same draft profile as Monangai and is not viewed as legitimate competition at this point. Roschon Johnson remains, but has not shown anything yet.
Bodiford also points out that Monangai not only won by seeing no competition, but he might also be the competition for Swift, and eat into his role. On one hand, the two are equated to Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery with Ben Johnson. So, it would be hard to say that Monangai, who compares to Montgomery, would actually be pushing out Swift, who many would say gets the Gibbs work.
However, it is not like Montgomery has not been one of the better fantasy values in recent years. Like Monanagi, he goes much later because he is viewed as the backup, but his role in short yardage leads to easy touchdowns. This is the valuable role that Monangai could have as well.
Swift is not as talented as Gibbs, and he is not signed beyond this year. The Bears could start to see if Monangai can handle more work, and if he cannot, then they know they need to go out and get a Swift replacement. If Monangai can handle more work, they would add a complementary back, not quite with the pedigree of someone like Gibbs, or even Swift.
So, Monangai could do more work in the short term, which is a win, and he could get more work in the long term, which is the ultimate win. His progression will be one of the most interesting notes to watch this summer in training camp.
