One of the biggest questions for the Chicago Bears is going to be who starts at left tackle. While the first OTA sessions surely are going to tell us everything we need to know, they did give us a glimpse into what we can expect in training camp. As of now, it looks like Braxton Jones is going to get the first crack.

The Chicago Bears give Braxton Jones his first look at left tackle

The decision is the expected one. Jones started his first three seasons with the Bears. While Johnson was not the head coach during any of that run, Jones also started the year for the Bears last season, but he was never fully healthy and ended up missing the year by going on the IR.

So, there is an alternate universe where Jones always stayed healthy and was coming into this year as the starter for another season. Considering OTAs is about getting everyone on the same page, it makes sense that they stuck the guy with the most familiarity into the first-team spot.

The injury made them explore other options, but Jones brings the most continuity to the offensive line and has just as much upside as any of the other options.

While there were only a few glimpses available to the media, the real question is going to be who gets work with the second team.

The early thought would be Theo Benedet. He also started for the Bears last year, so the familiarity is there. He has also been a developmental prospect for them. Just because his first look in the NFL did not go well does not mean that they will give up on him. They likely want to see him use that to take a step forward this year and are excited to see what he can do.

If they did not go with Benedet, it would have been one of Kiran Amegadjie or Jedrick Wills. Wills is tough to say because he is the newest to the team. He is also coming back from an injury, so he likely has the least on his plate.

Meanwhile, there is Amedgajie, who was taken high enough to get a look at starting by now. However, his first two NFL seasons showed no flashes, and Benedet firmly passed him up. If anything, Amegadjie might be the one getting backup right tackle looks, as he could be the furthest away from competing for the starting spot.
