Bears hint at Week 4 starting quarterback after Keenum gem

The Chicago Bears started Case Keenum against the Philadelphia Eagles and won in convincing fashion. However, Keenum is the Bears' third-string quarterback and only started because Caleb Williams has a hamstring injury and Tyson Bagent was in the concussion protocol until late in the week. 

Despite Keenum rising to the occasion and playing well in the win, head coach Ben Johnson made it clear that if Bagent is ready to go for Week4, he is going to be the Bears' starting quarterback. 

“We’ll have a discussion as a coaching staff and we’ll see where we need to go from here, but I said it last week, and I will say it again, there is a reason why Tyson ended training camp as our backup quarterback,” said Johnson after the game. 

Chicago Bears Give Hint into Week 4 Starting Quarterback 

Bagent was close to starting for the Bears in Week 3. However, he was in the concussion protocol until less than 48 hours before the game. Keenum practiced with the first team all week, and as Johnson said in his post-game press conference, he did a great job of convincing the coaching staff throughout the week that they did not need to push an injured player back into the lineup.

Johnson also noted that it would be tough for Bagent to come in cold with no practice and get the start. He added that Bagent did not work with the first-team offense much during training camp. So, he had limited work with the group of players that started against the Eagles.

Keenum did not work with them in the offseason either, but he was coming off of a week of practice getting all of the work with the first team. So, Johnson made it clear that Bagent will get the start if he can get in a full week of practice. The play of Keenum in Week 3 does not change the depth chart standing.

Considering Bagent was healthy to end the week and was getting work in practice during the final day of work, it looks like Bagent is going to start in Week 4. He will get all of the work with the first team and will go into the game with the experience needed.

The big question will be what happens if Bagent struggles. The team knows they have Keenum waiting in the background. Right now, Johnson remains confident in Bagent.
