The Chicago Bears have kicked off training camp, and the countdown has begun until meaningful snaps are played. Perhaps the biggest point of interest offensively in training camp and leading into the preseason is the newly formed receiver depth chart. One that has an underrated advantage that was pointed out by NFL pundit Warren Sharp. When it comes to projected salary in the 2026 season, the Bears are bottom five at the position after sending veteran DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills.
Chicago is only projected to spend $21 million at the position, now showing a lack of investment, but a clear advantage. The Bears have done an incredible job of building a young group of receivers without yet having to pay top-dollar for top shelf talent. Rome Odunze, Luther Burden, and obviously Zavion Thomas are all on rookie contracts. Looking at the veterans brought in, both Kalif Raymond and Scotty Miller signed potential bargain contracts; the Bears have managed the position perfectly.
Not only have the Bears given themselves an incredibly bright future, but they've managed the position well enough to give themselves a great deal of future flexibility. While Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams are obviously the biggest contributing factors, this is a small part of why Chicago's Super Bowl window is wide open.
Bears Have Overlooked Advantage Spending Little on Elite Talent at Receiver Position
Chicago has managed its core incredibly well, giving itself a wide window to contend and a nice mix of young talent and productive veterans. Most importantly, the Bears lack any contracts that cannot be escaped over the next two seasons or deals that are going to prevent the team from adding to positions of weakness.
With this in mind, the depth at receiver has to be appreciated, with the Bears making a wise decision turning the page on Moore. You now have a wider window of contention that is better matched by your receiving group and includes clear top shelf talent without contracts that are going to limit your ability to pay future pieces.
It will be interesting to watch Odunze and Burden both continue to develop and which player emerges as the primary weapon in the 2026 season. No matter the answer, there are controllable seasons ahead and plenty of space for the Bears to lock up both players. The season ahead remains undeniably exciting as the clock starts in what appears to be an incredibly long Super Bowl window.
