There is no way around the fact that the Chicago Bears are in an incredibly difficult division, with both the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions having legitimate hopes of contention. With this in mind, it has been nice over the last year to rely on the poor decision-making of the Minnesota Vikings to at least rule out one potential divisional threat. This continued over the last week as Minnesota named a winner from its quarterback competition long before preseason reps.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it will be Kyler Murray taking over as Minnesota's starter, pointing to the fact that the franchise has already given up on J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy was drafted as the team's expected future before a season-ending injury allowed Sam Darnold the chance to breathe life into his career and quickly exit the franchise to win a Super Bowl the following season with the Seattle Seahawks.
Minnesota pushed away a Super Bowl winner in favor of betting on McCarthy, who was unable to mount enough of a threat to Murray to push the competition into the 2026 preseason. While the Vikings might not be having a great time, the Bears cannot help but laugh at the quick conclusion of the competition and the fact that the Vikings are unable to get out of their own way.
Objectively, it didn't matter whether it was Murray or McCarthy getting the start for the Vikings. Caleb Williams is far above either starting option, with the same being said of rivals Jordan Love and Jared Goff, as much as it might pain Chicago fans to credit their rivals for anything.
Bears Can't Help but Continue to Appreciate Minnesota's Poor Decision-Making
Murray has a career losing record and has consistently dealt with injuries, suggesting that McCarthy's time in the starting lineup might not yet be over. Putting it simply, neither quarterback is a real threat to Chicago or the rest of what is an undeniably crowded NFC North. It is a welcome change of pace compared to the rest of what has an argument to be the league's best division.
Chicago can appreciate the continued ineptitude as well, based on the fact that Kirk Cousins was pushed out in favor of McCarthy, leading to Darnold facing the same fate, only for the young quarterback to be incapable of forcing a competition into the preseason.
The Vikings have quickly fallen over the last two years, and their downfall is undeniably working to Chicago's benefit. A fact that isn't lost on fans who are enjoying the drama that has continued in Minnesota.
