While the Chicago Bears are expected to be without Caleb Williams for at least another two weeks, there is a clear path to continuing to pile up wins. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen had the perfect plan in Week 3, shutting down the Philadelphia Eagles and stifling what was a respectable offense in the first two weeks of the season. Allen had the perfect plan to keep Jalen Hurts caged and leave the offense attempting to force the ball down the field.
No question, the Bears have the defensive talent to continue to support their backup quarterback and find ways to win. It helps that each of the next two weeks the matchups are unquestionably in Chicago's favor. Looking at Week 4 the New York Jets are starting veteran Geno Smith, while Breece Hall will be out presenting far less of a challenge when it comes to stopping the Jets rushing attack.
This will be followed by a matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the hated rival has shown an inability to establish the run or to protect Jordan Love. No question, the defense is set up for a potentially elite run to continue to push the Bears in the NFC North and allow Caleb Williams time to get completely healthy.
It is why Chicago was confident shuffling the secondary and relying on Allen to create a pass rush around Montez Sweat. The ability to get the most out of any roster is an underrated quality for a veteran defensive coach who has proven to be among the league's elite coordinators.
Bears can continue to rely heavily on defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as franchise waits for Williams
Leaning on the defense seemed extremely unlikely after the first game of the season when the Carolina Panthers exploded against the unit. Bryce Young passed for a trio of touchdowns and well over 300 passing yards as the Panthers had zero problem moving the ball against the Chicago defense.
Each week the performance has improved and the Bears now have reason to trust they can compete on the shoulders of Allen and an impressive backup quarterback in Keenum. No question, the Bears are in solid position and the defense deserves far more credit for what it has accomplished.
With this in mind, Bears fans have gone from extremely concerned to believing the team has a great chance of pulling out at least one additional win before the start quarterback returns. It will be interesting to watch what adjustments Allen continues to make as Chicago continues to prove itself as an elite contender.
