Bears fans won't like what latest backup quarterback rankings say about Tyson Bagent

Chicago values Tyson Bagent highly, but the rest of the NFL appears to see him much differently.

Tyson Bagent is a good backup quarterback. However, he is not an elite backup quarterback and that is likely why the Chicago Bears had a hard time trading him this offseason. Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated ranked the 32 backup quarterbacks, and Bagent finished seventh.

The Chicago Bears have a good, but not elite, backup quarterback

The way that the Bears act, they have one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the NFL. That is why the team is reluctant to trade him unless they get a legitimate offer. Still, they have said they want to do right by him and have him be a starter in the NFL. The issue is that while the Bears think all of this about Bagent, nobody else does.

Being seventh is good, and he came in one spot ahead of Justin Fields, with whom he used to battle. However, it means that most teams think they can do better with their current starter, and some teams even have better backups.

One of the most notable names on this list is Spencer Rattler, who came in sixth. Rattler is in the exact same spot as Bagent. Rattler was drafted late, while Bagent was a UDFA. Still, both got a few starts, have proven some NFL talent, but neither has been able to hold a spot down. Now, they have potential franchise quarterbacks ahead of them, and the team that they play for is listening to calls.

Neither has been traded because both teams are higher on their own asset. Bears fans are not impressed with Rattler, and Saints fans are not impressed with Bagent. However, both fan bases think they have a great backup who can start for other teams.

Rattler is rated higher because he has nearly 300 more attempts. The lack of experience is hurting Bagent when we get to this high on the list.

The top five featured Joe Flacco, Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa, Jameis Winston, and Fernando Mendoza. All of them are former first-round picks. Mendoza is the only one who does not have a long track record of starting. All of them got starts last season. Even if you sub out Mendonza for Kirk Cousins, he brings the same experience level.

Teams will lean on that experience rather than the unknown of Bagent. That is why Bagent is a good backup, but one with no value on the trade market.
