To say that the Chicago Bears' pass-rushing unit could use a boost wouldn't tell half of the story. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's seat might get blazing hot if they can't figure out how to keep the quarterback on his toes.
Montez Sweat is a star and should continue to feast in the Windy City, but a man can only do so much on his own. And after signing the often-injured Marcus Davenport, it's pretty clear that this team is desperate.
Considering that, perhaps getting a familiar face back in Chicago wouldn't be the craziest idea. Leonard Floyd is still a free agent, and his versatility and body of work might be just what this team needs right now.
The Bears should get Leonard Floyd on the phone
While he's no longer the player he once was, Floyd should be rostered. More specifically, his ability to line up at linebacker and defensive end would give this team much more than a band-aid solution. He's a proven veteran who can help right away.
He spent the first four seasons of his career in the Windy City. Back then, he logged 154 combined tackles, including 26 for a loss, to go along with 44 quarterback hits, 18.5 sacks, and nine passes defensed.
Floyd would then flourish with Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams before ultimately making his way to Atlanta. He's coming off a disappointing campaign with Raheem Morris' defense, but to be fair, the team struggled as a whole.
While his 3.5 sacks last season are far from impressive, he did have 8.5 sacks in the previous campaign and missed a couple of games with injuries. If he's fully healthy, this team can do much worse than by getting him on the field.
Floyd's best years are clearly behind him, but it's not like the Bears have a ton to work with right now. They might be able to get him at a discount, and he'd certainly appreciate another shot at getting the job done with the organization he started. It might be the perfect full-circle moment before riding into the sunset.
Thus far, he's logged a whopping 70.0 sacks in his ten years in the league. Even if he's not a full-time starter for Ben Johnson's team, the team can use him in obvious pass situations, whether it's coming off the edge or dropping back in coverage as another linebacker in certain packages.
