At the start of training camp, the Chicago Bears suffered a big loss in their secondary, as they lost Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson to a lower leg injury while training. Fortunately, Bears general manager Ryan Poles told reporters that they aren’t “overly concerned” long-term, per Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.
With Johnson on the shelf for the next few weeks, other Chicago cornerbacks have a chance to step up and earn more reps and playing time in the regular season.
Fast forward weeks later, and the Bears have another potential injury concern on their hands, this time to starting slot cornerback Kyler Gordon.
Standout CB Kyler Gordon Departs Thursday’s Training Camp Practice
On Thursday, Scott Bair of Marquee Sports Network reported that the 25-year-old Gordon was seen heading to the locker room at the start of the last practice period. Bair added that Gordon did not return to the field.
Kyler Gordon headed to the locker room at the start of the last period of this ongoing Bears practice and has not returned. Something to monitor.

As you can imagine, Bears fans on social media did not take the news of Gordon leaving camp lightly. The veteran cornerback did a good job of staying on the field last year, as he played in 15 games (13 starts).
However, the six-foot defensive back missed a couple of games due to a hamstring injury. Then in Gordon’s second season, the young cornerback appeared in 13 games, but missed four games due to a hand injury that forced him to go on injured reserve.
Finally, as a rookie, Gordon missed a few games due to a concussion. While he hasn’t suffered a season-ending injury, the former second-round pick has been banged up over the first few years of his career.
That said, Bears fans would love to hear that Gordon’s departure was only a precaution or something that will not cost him much time. If Chicago wants to compete for the NFC North crown this season, it needs a healthy Johnson and Gordon making plays in the secondary.
The depth behind Gordon isn’t special, but it has NFL experience with Josh Blackwell and Nick McCloud. The good news is we are still a few weeks away from the start of the NFL season. This means Gordon will have time to heal and recover if he misses time during the preseason.
