One of the consistent storylines throughout the Chicago Bears' 2026 offseason is the future of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. There has been a level of speculation that the Bears could attempt to trade away the respected backup to give the young arm a chance at finding a starting role. Caleb Williams has a strong history of durability, and there simply is no realistic path for Bagent to ever start for Chicago and play meaningful quarters. With this in mind, the Bears should absolutely attempt to build Bagent's trade value.

Training camp and preseason action will give the franchise a chance to shine a spotlight on Bagent and perhaps create a trade opportunity. Injuries and quarterback frustrations are both unavoidable, leaving every reason for the Bears to consider a potential trade.

If Bagent is handed an opportunity to start or even compete for a job, the Bears owe it to the backup to hand him the chance. Chicago has a great deal of stability at the position with Case Keenum having starting experience and a playoff win to lean on if Williams were to miss a short amount of time.

For the Bears, it makes sense to give Bagent this chance not only due to his talent, but due to the possibility of adding a draft pick for a player you never expect to take the field. Chicago should bolster the chances of this happening by shining a light on the backup.

Bears Backup Quarterback Tyson Bagent Could Still Become Surprise Trade Chip

Bagent playing well throughout camp and the early preseason would give the team a viable path to a potential deal. There is always a handful of teams dealing with quarterback frustrations or a surprise injury that pops up at the end of the summer. With this in mind, Bagent getting dealt is still very much on the table for a franchise that is gearing up for a potential Super Bowl run.

Keenum is more than capable of holding down the backup role with the quarterback not showing any obvious signs of aging. Bagent is extremely talented, but doesn't have the potential ceiling of Williams, leaving no reason for the Bears to continue to hold onto the backup.

If there is a potential starting opportunity, the Bears would be wise to jump at the chance to get even a lesser draft pick in exchange for a player you never expect to take the field. Chicago fans would also love to watch Bagent get his chance as long as it is far away from the Bears.
