One of the few sources of frustration for the Chicago Bears has been a secondary relying on a struggling Jaylon Johnson. It is far from an overblown story when you look at the PFF rating of the defensive back at 40.9; this ranks 97th out of 102 qualifiers, pointing to just how miserable the coverage has been. This leads to obvious speculation as to whether or not the franchise should look at adding to the secondary and giving the roster a level of insurance if Johnson's struggles continue.
Looking around the league, there is no shortage of potential targets that Chicago could entertain. With this in mind, both Marlon Humphrey and Donte Jackson both stand out as potential trade targets on AFC teams that could look to move on from veteran defenders. The Bears would be wise to explore adding depth at the position whether it is one of these names or even an overlooked addition.
Trading for a corner wasn't an expected deadline need, especially with the return of Kyler Gordon to the lineup. However, there is no arguing against the fact it is a clear need after the way the first part of the season has played out. There simply is no ability to rely on Johnson and this leaves a sense of urgency to add to the position.
For Chicago, what is so interesting about Ryan Poles and the Chicago front office is the list of clear options they have when it comes to possible positions the franchise could look to add to. The Bears have a stacked roster but could easily argue for a handful of positions as needing additions.
Bears clearly need to consider trading for capable corner as Jaylon Johnson's struggles continue
Still, it is easy to argue that no individual starting option has struggled as much as Johnson, and there isn't an easy answer off the current bench. While Dennis Allen has done a nice job rotating the team's options in the secondary, there is a clear lack of an option to plug into the lineup consistently if Johnson is going to need to be benched.
As much as Ben Johnson's team runs on the offense there needs to be enough supporting talent to help make a January run. As things currently stand the biggest concern that could get in the way of this is Johnson's poor play and the need to find a more consistent answer.
With this in mind, fans shouldn't be surprise if Chicago's deadline plans include an aggressive approach when it comes to adding to a secondary that has faced a surprise problem. One that needs to quickly find an answer either with Johnson improving, or Poles opting to bring in needed depth.
