Bears Coach Given a Chance to Save His Job on Monday
By Jovan Alford
Before the regular season ended for the Chicago Bears, general manager Ryan Poles revealed that the team would interview interim head coach Thomas Brown. As you can imagine, Chicago fans weren’t excited about this news, given how the team performed under his watch.
When Poles made that announcement, we didn’t know when the Bears would interview Brown, but now we do. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Chicago is interviewing Brown for their head coach vacancy on Monday.
Most fans do not want to see Brown back as the head coach, even though he led the Bears to an upset win in Week 18 over the Green Bay Packers. However, some fans seem open to the Bears retaining the 38-year-old as the offensive coordinator.
That said, whoever the Bears choose as their head coach, that person might want to bring in their guy to be offensive coordinator, leaving Brown in an awkward position.
Brown entered this season as the Bears’ passing game coordinator after being the offensive coordinator in Carolina last season. However, Brown became the interim offensive coordinator when Chicago surprisingly parted ways with Shane Waldron.
The 38-year-old coach didn’t stay in the interim OC role for long as the Bears fired then-head coach Matt Eberflus a day after Chicago’s frustrating Thanksgiving Day loss to the Detroit Lions.
The Bears struggled in Brown’s short tenure as the interim head coach (1-4), but getting that win over the Packers in the fashion they did was impressive.
In addition to the interview with Chicago for the HC role, the Seattle Seahawks will reportedly plan to interview Brown for their offensive coordinator role, per Pelissero. The Seahawks fired their OC Ryan Grubb after one season last week.
Therefore, if things don’t work out with Chicago, Brown could find another opportunity this offseason.
