The Chicago Bears played their first game in the post-Matt Eberfluas on Sunday afternoon against the San Francisco 49ers. While many people thought that would result in a boost in performance, it did not.

Instead, the 49ers destroyed the Bears 38-13. This embarrassing performance certainly changed my opinion on Thomas Brown becoming the Bears' next head coach quickly.

How Thomas Brown showed he isn't equipped to be the next head coach in loss to 49ers

Typically, after a coach is fired, teams receive a "new head coach bump" and play well in the next game. Unfortunately, for the Bears, that did not happen, and the team came out lacking energy and looking unprepared.

In the first half, the Bears' defense allowed the 49ers to score on four of their five possessions. During those possessions, the defense let up seven plays of 20+ yards. Even worse, it seems they weren't prepared to cover George Kittle, who had four of the seven 20+ yard plays.

While Brown's specialty isn't defense like Eberflus's was, the defensive failures still fall on his shoulders. With the talent on the defensive side of the ball coming into this game, being that unprepared against an injured 49ers team was unacceptable.

Moving over to the side of the ball that Brown does specialize in, the offense came out completely flat in the first half, totaling just four yards of total offense. That travesty was led by a heavy passing attack, which didn't make sense with the struggles the 49ers have faced in the run game the past two weeks.

Thankfully, Brown adjusted to that in the second half, and the Bears offense was more balanced. As a result of that, the offense had a 9:04, 16-play, 70-yard opening drive that resulted in a touchdown. Followed by a possession that ended in a fumble.

Their next offensive possession resulted in their second and final scoring drive of the game. This was a six-play drive that went 60 yards, lasting 3:09, resulting in a touchdown. Brown's offense, which only mustered 13 points against a battered 49ers defense, is downright blasphemous.

Leaving a bad first impression like this only gives Brown a stepper mountain to climb to go from interim head coach to full-time head coach. However, Ryan Poles, Kevin Warren and the fans may already be out on that idea after this game.
