The Chicago Bears lack any proven edge rushing options after Montez Sweat, relying on a group full of question marks. At the top of this list is Austin Booker, who is coming off a season with only 6.0 sacks in his first two seasons in the league. While the progression has been clear there is far from a proven resume, the third-year defender is yet to go into a season with this level of expectation.

Previously, Booker was looked at simply as a potential rotational option and development piece. This has changed in the 2026 offseason with Booker now facing the expectations of a starting edge rusher and expected to produce at a consistent level. There isn't any questioning it is a drastic jump and leaves an obvious level of concern around where Chicago's pass rush currently stands.

Booker has gone from a nice development story to a player the Bears need to take another leap for the defense to work as expected. If Chicago doesn't have the young pass rusher consistently contributing there is an easy argument the franchise is in trouble when it comes to a lack of clear production.

Bears Relying on Austin Booker at Alarming Rate Compared to Defender's First Two Seasons

It is important to note that in no way is this meant to predict failure for Booker, the defender has unquestionably shown promise. However, it is fair to note the giant jump in expectations and the lack of clear second options if Booker isn't able to deliver on these expectations. This puts the young edge rusher under the microscope going into training camp and leading into the preseason.

Fans and the front office want to see a reason to believe they made the right decision and that failing to trade or sign a splashy name wasn't a mistake. One that could still be remedied in the next weeks of the offseason and in training camp if the right fit were to present itself.

Booker is undeniably an important piece of this team, the only question is whether or not he is going to be able to live up to starting expectations. This is a question that only time and meaningful reps are going to be able to answer as the Bears have turned up the pressure on a player who was quietly developing previously. No question, Booker is one of the team's most important pieces heading closer to the 2026 season.
