The Chicago Bears have won five of their first seven games of the season, and they look like a legitimate Super Bowl contender right now. However, their defense can still use some more star power.
With the Los Angeles Chargers falling to a 0-6 hole and looking more like sellers than buyers at the November 10 trade deadline, the Bears should have a clear target. Khalil Mack is already familiar with the organization, and a return to Chicago would make perfect sense.
Notably, it seems like the fans aren't the only ones who feel that way. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Bears have already started pushing to bring the future Hall of Famer back to the Windy City.
Adam Schefter confirms the Bears have inquired about Khalil Mack
"You have to wonder if a team like the Chicago Bears will keep calling," Schefter said.
One doesn't have to be a mind reader to read between the lines here. Maybe it was a Freudian slip, or perhaps he knew exactly what he was doing, but the fact of the matter is that the Bears have already shown an interest in Khalil Mack.
And why wouldn't they? He's giving Father Time a run for his money, turning back the clock since arriving in Southern California and being arguably the lone bright spot in that defense. He can still play at an elite level.
For the most part, the Bears' defense has been much better than anticipated this season, and they've actually been one of the most efficient teams at getting to the quarterback. Even Kyler Gordon has now become a bit of a pass rusher for Dennis Allen's unit.
That said, even the best things can be improved, and when has adding one of the greatest players of all time hurt a team? At worst, Mack can be a rotational piece in obvious passing situations, given that he's still an elite defensive end in coverage.
There are no flaws in Mack's game, and he can be a mentor to younger players like Austin Booker. He knows the city, the fan base, and the organization, and playing in Chicago will give him a legitimate opportunity to ride into the sunset with a Super Bowl ring on his finger.
Mack deserves an opportunity to go out with a bang, and the Chargers should be looking to move his expiring deal. That said, there will be plenty of suitors for his services, so Ryan Poles must be aggressive to ensure he makes his way back to Illinois.
