Chicago Bears News: Justin Fields reportedly dealing with a dislocated thumb
Chicago Bears starting quarterback Justin Fields was unable to finish the game against the Minnesota Vikings after leaving the game with an injury and on Sunday night, there was more clarity on the injury that Fields suffered.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that Fields suffered a dislocated thumb and while did pop his thumb back into place, he could not grip the ball, which was why he was unable to return.
The latest on the injury to Chicago Bears starting quarterback Justin Fields after the team’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
While Fields was hoping to return to the game, there is a point of reference for a recovery time for quarterbacks who suffer a dislocated thumb, as Bleacher Nation points out. The point of reference is Jared Goff in 2020 and a medical source telling CBS Sports that a typical recovery time may be 4-to-6 weeks.
"It’ll likely take at least four to six weeks for a full recovery of the break and dislocation, a medical source tells CBS Sports, though further testing will confirm whether or not any additional issues, such as ligament damage, would prolong the recovery process.-CBS Sports"
The difference for Fields, in comparison to the injury that Goff suffered, is that X-rays came back negative and confirmed that there were no fractures. Fields is set to undergo MRI testing on Monday that will provide clarity on any ligament damage.
Barring the MRI imaging revealing ligament damage severe enough to end Fields’ third season in the NFL, the expectation is that Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will be mum on the quarterback’s status for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
At this point, there would seem to be a likelihood that rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent will make his first career start. The Bears did bring back veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman to the practice squad last week. Peterman, if Fields is out for multiple weeks, likely would be elevated to the backup quarterback spot.
