The Chicago Cubs dropped yet another to the Arizona Diamondbacks
The Chicago Cubs are officially in a funk. After sweeping the San Francisco Giants last week, they have now lost the first three games in a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The third one, which took place on Saturday, was a very close contest. The Diamondbacks beat the Cubs in a ten-inning affair. Obviously, that is a tough one for the Cubs.
Justin Steele pumped up his Cy Young Award resume with his start in this game. The Cubs ended up losing the ballgame but it was far from his fault. He dominated and gave them a chance to win once again.
Steele went 7.0 innings and gave up one run on six hits. He struck out six but walked zero. He has certainly had better starts in terms of hits against him but he only allowed one run which is amazing.
The Chicago Cubs are in a funk which happens from time to time over 162.
The offense went dry out of Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson each having a multi-hit game. Bellinger picked up the only two RBIs in this game as 3-2 was the final.
The Cubs are going to need their offense to step up big again if they are going to get out of this funk. They were playing so hot before losing these three games to the D-backs who are fighting for their life as well.
The Cubs fell to 4.0 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers after this loss. They still have a 1.0-game lead on that second wild card position over those pesky Diamondbacks.
They have a 2.5-game lead on the Miami Marlins for a playoff berth in general. Obviously, this series finally against the D-backs is a big one. They do not want to be swept by the team directly behind them in the Wild Card standings, especially in a four-game series.
The probables for this series finale are Brandon Pfaadt and Kyle Hendricks. Pfaadt is having a tough year while Hendricks has been awesome. This matchup favors the Cubs by a lot.
This is the perfect opportunity to win a game, end the bad streak, and get their offense on track. If they do, it won’t be long before they are rattling off tons of wins again.
