Chicago Bulls Rumors: Ayo Dosunmo and Coby White expected to return
Addressing the point guard position will be a point of emphasis for the Chicago Bulls as the team acknowledged that veteran point guard Lonzo Ball will not be returning for the 2023-2024 NBA season.
There appears to be momentum building toward a potential return of Derrick Rose to the Bulls as the team is expected to pursue Rose at the start of the NBA Free Agency period on Friday. It remains to be seen precisely how the Bulls will address the point guard position but there is expectation that guards Ayo Dosunmo and Coby White will return to the team.
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports offered a primer on NBA Free Agency and among the notes, Fischer touched on where things stand with the Bulls.
"Bulls are expected to bring back restricted free agents Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White, league sources told Yahoo Sports. There remains the chance for Patrick Beverley to return to Chicago, sources said, after the veteran helped the Bulls march into the play-in tournament this spring, although Beverley has drawn interest from several playoff contenders as well. If he were to ultimately find a new home, the rumblings of Chicago pursuing a reunion with Derrick Rose, whom the Bulls targeted in 2021 for the salary slot that ended up going to Caruso, could certainly resurface.-Jake Fischer via Yahoo Sports"
It would seem very likely that outside the pipedream scenario of the Bulls acquiring point guard Fred VanVleet in some form of a sign-and-trade with the Toronto Raptors, the veteran point guard that will be joining the Bulls this summer will either be Rose or a returning Patrick Beverly.
The point guard position is at the top of the Chicago Bulls’ wish list this summer.
From a sentiment perspective, Rose is clearly the guard that Bulls’ fans want as many have dreamed of the Chicago native returning home for a season or two before he calls it a career.
From a basketball perspective, Beverly is the better fit for the Bulls and we saw that experiment work for the most part after the team signed the veteran after the NBA Trade Deadline last season.
Regardless of whether it is Rose or Beverly, there had long been an expectation that Colby White would be a priority for the team this summer. With his play last season, White found comfort in the point guard position and his ability to hit the three-pointer makes him an asset that the Bulls can not afford to lose.
Dosunmo returning would be somewhat of a surprise considering the slumps he had during his sophomore season. Donsunmo’s rookie season is likely going to carry the weight of his next contract but assuming veteran point guard A, White, and Alex Caruso will all be a part of the team next season, the former University of Illinois standout may not have a path to consistent playing time with the Bulls.
