In the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles made the two best possible picks he could have made.

The first of his two selections in the round ended up being Texas running back Roschon Johnson, with the second being Cincinnati wide receiver Tyler Scott. Both of these guys could make a serious impact as rookies.

Focusing in on Johnson, though, the Bears didn’t necessarily need a running back. However, the value with Johnson being there was too good to pass up. He comes in having backed up star Bijan Robinson the past few seasons with the Longhorns, but make no mistake, this kid is a heck of a running back.

For Bears fans who might not be as familiar with Johnson just yet, here’s a little more background on the newest running back in Chicago.

Chicago Bears rookie running back Roschon Johnson is a former quarterback

Johnson came to the Longhorns as a quarterback. However, just one week before the Texas season opener during Johnson’s freshman year, he switched positions.

First of all, the timing of that move couldn’t be more unbelievable. What’s most impressive about that switch is the fact that he went on to rush 123 times for 649 yards and seven touchdowns, which would go down as his best collegiate season, statistically speaking.

The only reason he didn’t improve upon those numbers is because of the fact that Texas had Robinson incoming the following year, and Robinson came in as a future superstar, so Johnson took a back seat.

Still, Texas used Johnson often. He was as good of a second fiddle as you would find in college football, and very versatile as a former quarterback.
