Blackhawks News: The trade deadline has come and gone
The Chicago Blackhawks were one of the big sellers at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline. With where they are in the standings, it is no surprise. It is by design as we all know what their true goal is in the end.
They have made some smaller trades throughout the trade season early on. They took on Nikita Zaitsev’s contract in order to get a second in 2023 and a fourth in 2024. Future considerations went to the Ottawa Senators in this deal.
Then they made an AHL forward swap when they sent Josiah Slavin to the Anaheim Ducks. This was a one-for-one deal.
A few days later, they sent Jack Johnson back to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Andreas Englund. Johnson is going back to the team where he won the Stanley Cup a year ago.
The Chicago Blackhawks made some big trades at this deadline as they rebuild.
From there, the big trades started to go down. They sent Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty, and two conditional fifth-round picks to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Joey Anderson, Pavel Gogolev, a conditional first-round pick, and a 2026th second. The condition is it is top-ten protected.
Then came the big one. The Hawks sent Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers in a three-team deal with the Arizona Coyotes who facilitated it. In addition to Kane, the Rangers got Cooper Zech in the deal for their AHL squad.
In return for Kane, the Hawks got Vili Saarijarvi from Arizona and Andy Welinski from the New York Rangers. They also got a second-round pick that will become a first if the Rangers win two rounds to go with a 2025 fifth. Arizona got a conditional third for retaining some of Kane’s contract.
After that, a couple more AHL trades were made. They sent Maxim Golod to the Ducks for Dylan Sikura as these two came together for another AHL swap. On the same day, the Buffalo Sabres got future considerations for Anders Bjork.
Then, the Hawks made one more huge trade as they sent Max Domi and Dylan Wells to the Dallas Stars to take on Anton Khudobin’s contract and a second-round pick. That is a great deal for the Hawks to land a high draft pick.
There is some bad hockey coming up for the Chicago Blackhawks but it is going to work out well for them in the end if they come out of this with a draft lottery win. Even if they don’t win it, they are going to get a great player.
Overall, this was a great deadline for Kyle Davidson in a lot of ways. It is tough to see them dismantle the team like this but it is the way it goes sometimes. This can lead to a lot of winning if they are smart going forward.
