The Chicago Blackhawks traded Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers. Although we knew it was coming for a couple of days now, it is still shocking as the greatest player in the history of the franchise is now off to another team. It is certainly going to be an adjustment.

The New York Rangers needed a lot to work in their favor in order to get this deal done. There is a reason that the framework of the deal has been in progress since last Thursday and took this long to get it done.

Now, after a little while, we know the full details of the entire trade as both the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks have made it official.

The first note is that the Arizona Coyotes facilitated the trade to make the salary cap issues work out. For that, they were given the New York Rangers’ 2025 third-round pick. In addition to Patrick Kane, the Rangers are getting Cooper Zech.

The Blackhawks are getting a conditional second-round pick in 2023, a fourth-round pick in 2025, Vili Saarijarvi, and Andy Welinski.

The condition on that pick has to do with the Rangers in the playoffs. If they win two rounds and reach the Eastern Conference Finals, that second-round pick in 2023 becomes a first in either 2024 or 2025.

The Chicago Blackhawks traded the greatest player to ever play for them.

This was a tough day for Chicago Blackhawks fans. Once the teams announced it, you knew there was no going back and it was real. It took a couple of days for the logistics to work out but it ended up getting done in the end.

Now, the Hawks really have to focus on the rest of the team heading into the trade deadline on Friday. There are a lot of other parts that could end up moving. Hopefully, they are able to get the return that they deserve.

There is going to be some ugly hockey in Chicago for the rest of this season. Embrace it. Enjoy it. There could be big things happening this summer if the lottery balls fall their way. If the rebuild continues on this path, they could start to get good again in the coming years.
