Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Surprise team trades for number 1 pick
By Ryan Heckman
Once upon a time, the Bears drafted a converted safety who became one of the greatest linebackers in team history, Brian Urlacher. Funny enough, Texas’ DeMarvion Overshown made the same move after coming to the Longhorns as a safety.
At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Overshown is one of the most athletically-impressive players in this year’s defensive class. He possesses sideline-to-sideline speed as a linebacker who excels against the run. For Bears fans missing the speed and pursuit of Roquan Smith, Overshown is a phenomenal consolation, and in the third round, nonetheless.
Though he’s great against the run, Overshown’s experience as a safety also gives him an advantage against the pass as well. He automatically becomes a plus-starter on this defense.
The Bears go defense once more, here, in the fourth round by selecting Missouri’s Isaiah McGuire. Pairing McGuire with Herbig, Gipson and Robinson now gives the Bears a foursome of young pass rushers that can feed well off each other.
McGuire is another player who excels against the run, which might make you sense a theme here. The Bears have to get better in that area, and McGuire is another player that can do that. He’s well-rounded, athletically, but also gives the Bears a legitimate pass rushing threat, too. Last year with the Tigers, McGuire totaled 9.0 sacks.
