Chicago Bears loss to Green Bay Packers solidifies 2022 identity
The Chicago Bears had the opportunity on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers to provide a legitimate data sample as to the type of team they will be in the first year under rookie head coach Matt Eberflus and rookie general manager Ryan Poles.
Sure, the Bears technically have a victory on the season. The Bears won their season-opening tilt against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 despite being dominated in every facet of the game.
The Bears’ embarrassment against the Green Bay Packers has confirmed the idea that the monsoon-like weather conditions in Week 1 were the team’s MVP in their victory over the 49ers and that the team has a general lack of talent.
Entering the season, the Bears only had four legitimately talented players that have the potential to make a difference in games. Those players are quarterback Justin Fields, running back David Montgomery, wide receiver Darnell Mooney, and linebacker Roquan Smith.
Montgomery is the only one out of that group that showed up on Sunday night. He carved the Packers’ defense up as he rushed for 122 yards on 15 carries.
Fields, at the quarterback position, is considered a bright spot for the Bears in regard to their future but he first will need to put together consistent stretches of competent quarterback play this season.
Field’s play on Sunday night was not competent and if that is the inconsistency that is displayed for the entire season, the Bears will need to seriously evaluate the direction of their quarterback position heading into 2023.
The Green Bay Packers solidified the 2022 Chicago Bears’ identity on Sunday.
2022 was meant to be the season that wide receiver Darnell Mooney proved to be a legitimate No.1 wide receiver in the NFL.
Two games into the season and Mooney has only proved that there is a wide gap between being the No.1 wide receiver during practice and being a No.1 wide receiver in actual games. Mooney has a total of four receiving yards on two receptions during the Bears’ first two games this season.
Unlike Mooney, Smith was actually visible on the field during Sunday’s loss to the Packers but he was often seen being carried by Packers’ ball carriers as they were advancing for a first down.
Once again, the Packers exposed the ugly truth of the Chicago Bears. The truth is that the Bears are not a talented football team and have constructed a roster that is littered with quality special teams players but not much after that.
