Drew Smyly should be proud of his Field of Dreams performance
The Chicago Cubs put on a very nice performance at the Field of Dreams on Friday. They joined the Cincinnati Reds and put on a show in front of the whole world on national television. Everyone involved should be incredibly proud.
In order for the Cubs to get the win in a season that hasn’t gone very well, they needed contributions from everyone. There were some offensive players that had huge games but the pitching wasn’t half bad either.
Drew Smyly started the game for the Chicago Cubs and he had a magnificent game. It certainly wasn’t your normal pitching setting for a Major League Baseball game and he went out there and dominated. The Cubs should be very content with the way that he pitched.
Smyly went 5.0 innings where he allowed no runs on four hits and two walks. The most incredible part is that he struck out nine batters in those five innings. 9 of the 15 outs he recorded came via the strikeout which is absolutely amazing.
Drew Smyly was incredible for the Chicago Cubs at the Field of Dreams Game.
This was as good of a performance as any team could get in a game this big. Sometimes nerves get the best of these guys in these big games but Smyly handled it very well. He is clearly someone to consider keeping around, for now, to see how he moves forward.
After a performance like this on such a big stage, the Cubs should be confident in him for the rest of the season and he might even be able to stick around to help the younger kids moving forward. He doesn’t have to be a number one or anything like that but he can be a great middle-of-the-rotation type of veteran.
When the Cubs are ready to win again, they can know that Smyly has a chance to be a great “big game” pitcher because of the way that he handled the Field of Dreams Game. At 33 years old, it isn’t a lock that he is around for long but he will be good for the franchise while he is there.
The rest of the game saw the bullpen yield just two runs and the Cubs were able to hang on for the 4-2 win. It was a spectacular event to watch and the Cubs got the win. Smyly’s great start was a big reason why.
