The Chicago Cubs are going into deadline day with both Willson Contreras and Ian Happ still on their roster. That is how you know that they are going to have a busy day because it is all but done that they will be traded at some point before the deadline.

We don’t know who it is going to be but we know it is coming and it is going to hit hard when it does. There are a few things that might need to happen before they figure out the end result here for both of them.

In the case of Ian Happ, people might be waiting on some sort of resolution to the Juan Soto issue. He may or may not get traded and teams that miss out on him might fall back on Happ. It is not a bad consolation prize at all.

As for Contreras, it is going to come down to who offers the best package. We saw two catchers (Christian Vazquez and Reese McGuire) change teams yesterday which may set a bar for Contreras but he is wildly better at baseball than both of them.

The Chicago Cubs will certainly look different without Contreras and Happ.

Both Happ and Contreras are fan favorites that played together in the 2022 MLB All-Star Game. Contreras was the starting catcher for the National League All-Stars and Happ came in the game off the bench. It was their last big moment in Chicago Cubs jerseys.

During their last home game, it became obvious that they knew it was the end and were told something. They were the last two in the dugout and had a nice moment together that ended with a big-time hug.

Their weekend series was on the road against the San Francisco Giants which is why they have played some games in between that big hug and the trade. No matter what team you cheer for, it is easy to feel emotions about the human side of things.

It isn’t fun to watch your teams trade their best players with the future in mind but you have to understand it to some degree. The Cubs already made two trades and got good returns and they are hoping for more of the same from these two.
